About Exhibition
민화시리즈
다채로운 색상의 민화 시리즈는 2차원의 평면 작품들이 마치 종이 인형으로 재탄생 하여 재미를 선사하는 듯 하다. 우리나라 민화에서 만날 수 있는 거침없는 색상과 형태의 표현이 그대로 살아있으며 앞면과 뒷면은 각각 다른 패턴과 색으로 구성되어 있다. 양 면이 다르기 때문에 하나의 작품이 두 가지의 다른 효과를 내기도 한다. 따라서 그냥 옆에 두고 보는 미술품이나 장식품이 아닌 움직이고 변화하며 사람들과 함께 공존하는 성격을 담은 작품이 되는 것이다.
이와 더불어 선보이는 초상화 시리즈는 우리에게 친숙한 동물들을 소재로 만들었다. 작품에 이용되는 동물의 형태는 흔히 동물이 가진 독특한 신체의 선과 구조들이 대부분이며 동물들이 가진 표정이나 얼굴의 생김새에는 무심했던 것이 사실이다. 하지만 신상호의 초상화 시리즈는 인간들처럼 초상화의 모델이 된 동물들의 얼굴을 소재로 하고 있다. 인간이 동물들에게서 느끼는 신비롭고 새로운 감정들을 그들의 자태나 몸짓, 신체 구조가 아닌 얼굴로 나타내고 있기 때문에 우리는 작품에서 다양한 표정과 감정을 담고 있는 동물들을 만날 수 있다. 또한 평면이 아닌 부조의 방식을 택해 다양한 색이 지나간 붓 자국이나 터치들이 입체로 표현되어 있어 생동감을 느낄 수도 있다
MINHWA SERIES
The various colors of MINHWA SERIES give us fun as if two-dimensional plane works turns into a paper doll. The color and shape is just like Korean ‘MINHWA’ (folk painting) and each front and back side carries different patterns and colors. Since both sides are different, one work generates two different effects. Accordingly, it is not an ordinary artwork or adornment normally placed nearby but an artwork coexists with people by moving and changing itself.
In addition, the theme of PORTRAIT SERIES is an animal which is familiar to us. The figure of animals in artworks is generally formed by unique line and structure of their body and it is true that the details of their face and expression are pretty much unconcerned. However, the PORTRAIT SERIES of Shin, Sang-Ho is focusing on the face of animals like the portrait of human. Because the mysterious and new feelings of human beings from animals are expressed by their faces not from their appearance, gesture or body structure, we can meet the animals with various faces and emotions in this series. Also, the relief technique is used instead of plane to express the solidity of the various colors of brush marks and touches so that it can be look so lifelike.
