About Exhibition
‘사물’을 바라보는 고집스러운 ‘우아한 노력’
차영석
나는 오랜 시간 ‘사물’에 천착해 왔다. 2005년부터 시작한 <건강한 정물>연작은 조악한 미감들로 넘쳐나는 잡동사니 같은 세상 속에서 독특하고 묘한 방식으로 존재하는 사물들을 통해 타인의 취향과 욕구를 살피고, 여러 사물들 속에 투영된 사회현상과 일상적 면모를 표현했다. 이후로 이어지는 <습관적 세계>연작 중 <은밀한 습관>, <망각한 변형>, <어떤 것>은 전 작업의 형식적 요소를 이어가지만, 타인의 취향보다는 세상의 사물들과 관계 맺고 있는 나의 개인적 취향과 욕구에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 현재 진행 중인 <우아한 노력>, <매시업>, <주이상스>연작에서는 과한 장식과 미감들로 넘쳐나 우아한 감각의 취향을 뽐내고 있지만, 결국은 이러한 사물들 역시 우리 시대가 지니고 있는 취향의 어떤 단면들일 수도 있다는 생각을 표현하고 있다.
비록 덧없을지라도 세상에 존재하는 사물들에 대한 생각과 개인적 취향의 미적인 관심이 변화해 온 이러한 과정은 초기에 등장한 수많은 사물 가운데에서 선별한 사물들이 반복적으로 등장한다. 전적으로 나의 개인적 취향에 따라 선택한 사물 가운데 이름을 알 수 없는 식물, 분재, 마트료시카, 인형, 스노볼, 도자기, 농구공, 새 등이 반복적으로 그려진 것을 확인할 수 있다. 그리고 운동화, 옷, 가방, 시계, 보석 등 소수의 사물들을 그리는 최근 작업에서 사물에 대한 개별적 환상을 제시하기 위해 대상의 형태를 채우고, 질감을 만드는 매우 반복적이고, ‘습관’적인 작업 방식을 통해 나의 취향을 발견하게 되었다. 또한 그리는 사물에 대해 은밀하고, 밀접해지는 개인주의적 방식은 스스로 ‘망각’할 수밖에 없는 방향으로 변형되고 변화해왔다. 이러한 변화를 통해 나의 은밀한 취향을 드러내고, 일정한 호흡으로 세밀하게 그리는 작업 방식과 사물을 해석하는 고집스러운 조형실험은 결국 시각적 유희를 넘어 ‘주이상스’에 도달하는 내밀한 취향의 발로라 할 수 있다.
사물에 대한 인식과 취향들을 나름의 원리와 방향성으로 형식적인 실험을 지속하며 어느 순간 단단해지고 있는 강박적 그리기 방식과 스타일의 형성에 이르기까지 오랫동안 나는 그리기의 힘겹고, 묘한 과정을 반복하는 ‘우아한 노력’을 하고 있다. 사물을 통해 타인의 취향과 욕구를 살피는 것을 넘어 ‘사물과 나’의 관계에 대해 고민하는 과정이 파편화된 세계의 사물들에 대한 존중만큼이나 나의 욕망의 ‘공백’에 대한 두려움을 ‘반복’으로 극복해 보려는 시도일 수도 있을 것 같다.
A Persistently ‘Elegant Endeavor’ in Looking at ‘Things’

I have long explored the concept of "things." In my Well Still Life series, commenced in 2005, I examined the tastes and desires of others through objects that exist in unique and strange ways in a cluttered world filled with poor aesthetics. This series represented the social phenomena and everyday aspects reflected in various objects. In the subsequent series Chronic Circumstance, Confidential Custom, Transforming Being Forgotten, and Something, I retained the formal elements of my oeuvre while shifting my focus to my personal tastes and desires related to objects in the world, rather than those of others. My ongoing series, such as An Elegant Endeavour, Mashup, and Jouissance, overflow with excessive decoration and aesthetics, showcasing an elegant sense of taste. However, these series also convey the idea that such objects reflect certain aspects of contemporary taste.
The objects in my early works selected from numerous things are repeatedly utilized in my evolving exploration of the aesthetic interests and personal tastes related to objects in the world. Among the objects chosen based entirely on my preferences are unknown plants, miniature trees, Matryoshka dolls, snowballs, ceramics, basketballs, and birds, all of which I depict repeatedly. In my recent works, I focus on a smaller selection of objects such as sneakers, clothes, bags, watches, and jewelry. Through a very repetitive and "habitual" working method, I fill the forms of these objects and create texture to express my individual illusions about them. As a result, I discover my own taste through such working method. This personal approach that becomes more secret and closer to things I depict has transformed into a method that cannot help being ‘forgotten.’ The method of expressing my private preferences through these changes and detailing persistent formative experiments in interpreting objects reflects my secret tastes that extend beyond visual play and reach a state of ‘jouissance.’
I have consistently engaged in formal experiments with my perception of and preference for objects, guided by my own principles and directions. For a long time, I have made an "elegant endeavor" to repeat the arduous and strange process of drawing, developing an obsessive working method and style that eventually solidified. Beyond exploring the tastes and desires of others through objects, my ongoing reflections on the relationship between "objects and myself" may represent an effort to confront the fear of the "emptiness" in my desires through the act of "repetition," as well as a form of respect for the fragmented world of objects.
